One of the best preserved castles in Greece is the New Navarino or Niokastro, located near the entrance of the port of Pylos. It was built during the Turkish occupation in 1573, so that the Turks could control the western coast of Peloponnese.
It was named Niokastro in order to be discerned from Palaiocastro or Old Navarino, which was created by the Franks and controlled the old port. Like almost all the castles of the wider area, it was a bone of contention for several ambitious conquerors (Venetians, Turks and Russians).
Despite the many battles that have taken place over the centuries, Niokastro is still in a very good condition and it is considered to be one of the most beautiful castles in Greece.
